Jhpiego and Chemonics win award to improve medical and nursing education in Egypt
01 May 2005
USAID/Egypt has awarded Jhpiego and its partner Chemonics International a
3.5 year US$11 Million Task Order to strengthen medical and nursing education in Egypt. The
purpose of this Task Order is to provide technical support for the implementation of the
Mission’s Health Workforce Development (HWD) Project.
The HWD Project is designed to assist
the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) to improve the basic knowledge and skills of
medical and nursing graduates who will work in the Ministry of Health and Population and
other health care sites through a process of broad-based strengthening of professional
health education. The HWD Project works to enhance the capacity of graduates to deliver
high-quality health care services by strengthening the undergraduate and house officer
preservice medical and nursing education systems in the areas of obstetrics/gynecology,
pediatrics, and community medicine/health. The HWD team will work with the Supreme
Council of Universities (SCU) and its affiliated 17 medical and 14 nursing faculties.
The HWD Project will be overseen by Jhpiego's Family Planning/Reproductive
Health Center of Excellence. Dr. Clayton Ajello will serve as the HWD Project
Director, based in Cairo.
