Mancuso delivers keynote address at World Trade Center Institute Embassy Day
19 May 2005
Jhpiego was the signature sponsor of the 17th Annual Embassy Day,
held on 19 May 2005 in Montgomery County, Maryland. The event, hosted by the World Trade
Center Institute (WTCI), brought together ambassadors, embassy officials and Maryland
companies doing business internationally. Over 500 people were in attendance.
The event opened with a VIP breakfast hosted
by WTCI President Deborah Kielty, Maryland Secretary of
State Karl Aumann, and Jhpiego President and CEO Dr. Leslie Mancuso. After the
breakfast, participants adjourned to an international trade show featuring embassies, businesses
and organizations offering information on their countries, products and services,
and partnership opportunities.
At lunchtime, Kielty and Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan
introduced a four-person panel that discussed public-private
partnerships. Speakers included representatives of the Embassy of Britain and the Embassy of Australia along
with luncheon speaker sponsors Discovery Communications and Lockheed
Martin.
Joining Jhpiego staff at their lunch tables were USAID
representatives; embassy representatives from
Indonesia, Singapore, Mozambique and the Philippines; and business
representatives from Bank of America, Becton Dickinson, Medex, AIG, Pfizer and
GE Healthcare Technologies.
Before the keynote address by Mancuso, guests watched a video
that introduced Jhpiego with an overview of its people and programs. Mancuso then
spoke about her recent travels to Indonesia and Afghanistan—and described how
public-private partnerships have supported tsunami relief efforts, maternal and
neonatal health programs, and other health initiatives. Mancuso stressed that
these alliances are beneficial for partners, and serve a critical role in
helping communities in need of high-quality, accessible health care around the
world.
