Global meeting on cervical cancer prevention in low-resource settings

Jhpiego’s Cervical Cancer Prevention Program (CECAP), in collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Chulalongkorn University, invites you to a meeting to address prevention of cervical cancer in low-resource settings. The meeting, titled "Preventing Cervical Cancer: From Research to Practice," will be held from 4 to 7 December 2005 at the Montien Riverside Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. An optional visit to project sites in Roi Et Province, Thailand, will be available to pre-registrants on a first-come basis.

Each year approximately 400,000 new cases of cervical cancer are detected. Nearly 230,000 women die of cervical cancer each year, more than 85% of those in countries with limited resources. The Pap smear test, widely available in developed nations, has led to early detection of precancerous lesions and a decline in mortality from cervical cancer.

However, Pap test-based cervical cancer programs have not been successfully established in developing countries. In recent times, alternatives to the Pap test, such as visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and efforts to better link treatment to testing through the single visit approach have been successfully implemented in several countries and offer new direction in prevention of cervical cancer.

The objectives of this meeting are to:

  • Review the evidence supporting strategies for prevention of cervical cancer in low-resource settings

  • Examine best practices for implementing large-scale programs for preventing and treating cervical cancer

This meeting will gather leading clinical experts, program managers, and reproductive health professionals from Asia, Africa and Latin America. There will be opportunities to hear about state-of-the-art interventions, explore innovative approaches, discuss challenges in bringing about such care to vulnerable populations, participate in skills enhancement sessions, debate program approaches and plan for concerted actions.

A unique feature of this meeting is the opportunity for participants to view demonstrations of innovative clinical procedures used in cervical cancer prevention. The meeting will be of particular value to donor and technical assistance agencies, bilateral programs and professional associations that support women’s health, as well as ministries of health engaged in provision of reproductive health services.

This announcement seeks your participation as well as your support for participants from countries in which you have programs. We hope that each country will send a team comprising of at least:

  • One high level decision-maker from a ministry of health,

  • One senior level midwife or nurse,

  • One physician/obstetrician (representing a leading teaching institution), and

  • One reproductive health program manager from a rural or remote setting.
