Jhpiego sponsored a panel at the Global Health Council's annual meeting highlighting
the private sector's role in tsunami relief and reconstruction in Aceh, Indonesia. The IBM Crisis
Response Team, ExxonMobil and Johnson & Johnson joined Jhpiego to provide a sense of the challenges
that must be met with disasters on the scale of the South Asia tsunami. The presenters discussed how
they were working with governments and NGOs to help address disasters, but also described how they
are working with groups like Jhpiego to help mitigate major public health crises including HIV/AIDS
and malaria in pregnancy.
Presenters helped provide a better understanding of how governments, corporations
and NGOs can better prepare for emergencies and the role the private sector plays in terms of its
flexibility and expediency, which are critical to saving lives. Finally, they provided an overview
of the large financial, material and technical contributions that are made by corporations and how
vital they are for future disaster relief.
