Factors enabling and constraining the use of maternal and newborn health services in northern Nigeria: Formative research findings and implications

Dr. Tunde Segun joined Jhpiego/ACCESS Nigeria from his previous position of Assistant Director in the Reproductive Health Division of the Department of Community Development and Population Activities (CDPA) of the Federal Ministry of Health. He graduated with an MBBS degree from the University of Lagos, Nigeria, in 1990 and obtained an MPH from the same University in 1999. Dr. Segun has been a key national RH stakeholder with very broad local experience in reproductive health policy and programming in Nigeria. He was instrumental in the launching of the 2003 National Emergency Obstetric Care facilities survey, which has provided important data for the strategic planning process aimed at the achievement of the health-related Millennium Development Goals in the country.

From policy to practice: A quality improvement approach improves antenatal care services in Tanzania

Gaudiosa Tibaijuka, Senior Midwifery Advisor working with ACCESS/ Jhpiego Tanzania Office has a master's degree in Education for Health. She has nursing and midwifery clinical and capacity development competencies, with vast experience in reproductive and child health program coordination. Currently, Gaudiosa advises the Tanzania ACCESS program in the assessment of service delivery for maternal and newborn health and in the design and implementation of evidence-based interventions in partnership with public and private sectors. She coordinates human and non-human resources for effective focused antenatal care and other reproductive and child health areas with both pre-service and in-service institutions.

Integrating reproductive health and family planning into HIV care in African urban slum

Jane Otai is a social scientist with 20 years' experience working in the urban slums of Nairobi, Kenya. She has worked with community-based organizations to alleviate the challenges faced by women and children living in the slums. More recently, Ms. Otai has worked with Jhpiego to provide comprehensive care to people living with HIV in the Nairobi slums of Korogocho and Viwandani. Ms. Otai has a special interest in ensuring access to quality health care in low-resource settings and works to improve the health situation in these slums at the community, facility and policy levels.

Bringing services where they are most needed: Cervical cancer prevention and treatment in Malawi

Amy Kleine is the Cervical Cancer Prevention Program Manager for Jhpiego, based in Baltimore, Maryland. She has over seven years’ experience managing and evaluating international public health programs, with a focus on women’s and reproductive health. In the four years she has been with Jhpiego, she has provided program support and technical assistance to several countries including Thailand, Ghana, Malawi, Haiti and Indonesia. This includes providing guidance for the implementation of national cervical cancer control strategies and programs. Ms. Kleine earned her Master’s in Public Health and Master’s in Social Work from the University of Michigan in 2002.
