Mancuso brings health care focus to governor’s China mission

18 October 2004

Baltimore, Md. – Dr. Leslie Mancuso, President and CEO of Baltimore-based Jhpiego, today joins Governor Robert Ehrlich and other corporate leaders on a mission to Singapore and China. Jhpiego is among the businesses being showcased during the mission to build new economic ties between Maryland and Asia.

Mancuso, a registered nurse, brings significant experience within China’s emerging health care sector. She served as an advisor to the China Nursing Association and China’s Ministry of Health in the establishment of national nursing and medical programs. She has worked with the municipal government of Shanghai and Shanghai Secondary Medical University to establish a 250-bed children’s hospital in the Pudong region of Shanghai—China’s first children’s hospital meeting international standards.

"I thank Governor Ehrlich for including Jhpiego on this important mission to China and Singapore. At Jhpiego we are working every day to improve the health of women and families throughout the world, including regions of Asia, Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East," Mancuso stated. "During this mission, I hope to reconnect with key leaders in China’s health sector and open doors to new health care initiatives benefiting women and families across China."

Mission participants will meet with government officials, business leaders, and other high-level decision-makers. As the first visit to China by a Maryland Governor in nearly a quarter-century, the Maryland delegation will receive widespread exposure and access.

"As a global leader in the creation of innovative and effective approaches to developing human resources for health, Jhpiego is eager to assist China in meeting its twenty-first century health care needs," concluded Mancuso.
