Jhpiego receives $2.2 million for international women’s health initiatives

Baltimore, Maryland—Jhpiego, an international health affiliate of The
Johns Hopkins University, has received two awards totaling more than $1.5 million to strengthen HIV/AIDS health services in Kenya.
Population Services International (PSI) has awarded Jhpiego $1,259,920 over three years to assist in
the implementation of the United States Agency for International Development’s AIDS, Population, and Health Integrated
Assistance Program II – Health Communications and Marketing (APHIA II-HCM) cooperative agreement. The aim of the project
is to increase the long-term health impact in HIV/AIDS, family planning, and maternal and child health through social marketing.
Jhpiego will lead the training component for PSI’s development of a national family planning referral
network among its private sector providers. Jhpiego’s primary tasks will be to (1) assist with the integration of HIV
prevention messages offered by PSI’s network (2) improve the quality of family planning counseling provided by these
providers, and (3) prepare local clinics to manage referrals.
Jhpiego received its second award from the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC)—$290,000—to
assist in the implementation of APHRC’s two year Rockefeller Foundation-funded program in Kenya entitled “Comprehensive
Care for HIV at the Household Level in African Informal Settlements: Consolidating the Gains.”
The goal of the program is to improve the quality and increase the use of HIV/AIDS services in the
urban informal settlements of Korogocho and Viwandani in Nairobi, Kenya. Jhpiego will introduce interventions based
on APHRC study findings around high-risk groups. The interventions will aim to improve the physical and psychological
health of HIV-affected households in the communities. Jhpiego will work with additional partners to advise HIV
infected groups in the settlements on nutrition and positive living.
