Jhpiego receives award for work in malaria

Baltimore, Maryland—Jhpiego, an international health organization affiliated with The Johns Hopkins University, has been named Non-Governmental Organization of the Year by the Malaria Foundation International (MFI). Jhpiego was honored for its work in advocacy, education, and training with a special emphasis towards preventing and treating malaria in pregnant women throughout Africa.
According to MFI, the foundation’s award was established in 2006 to honor the many extraordinary individuals and organizations that have made and continue to make important contributions in the fight against malaria. The awards program also serves to engage new leaders, including teachers, students, scientists, journalists, business leaders, celebrities and politicians.
“Malaria can be prevented, reduced and managed with low-cost interventions. Jhpiego works with our country partners to develop their capacity to prevent women from dying from this disease,” says Dr. Leslie Mancuso, President and CEO of Jhpiego. “We are proud of this honor and also recognize our many partners around the world that help us to achieve our goals.”
Other honorees include The First Lady, Laura Bush (First Lady Advocate of the Year), Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (movie actors of the year) and Bono (celebrity of the year).
