Emergency Obstetric Care: Quick Reference Guide for Frontline Providers
This pocket-sized booklet is designed to help the health care provider in a Type 1 health post recognize and respond to obstetric
emergencies. The goal of emergency obstetric care at the health post level is to diagnose the problem, stabilize the woman, and
arrange for transport to the nearest facility capable of managing and treating the complication.
The Quick Reference Guide is based on the World Health Organization manual Managing Complications in Pregnancy and Childbirth: A Guide for Midwives and Doctors. The first section
of the Guide deals with responding to an emergency using rapid initial assessments; the next section presents diagnosis and
management according to symptom; the Appendices include information on active management of the third stage of labor,
essential drugs and supplies, infection prevention and guidelines for procedures. (2003) Available in English, French and Spanish.
