Education, Training and Curriculum Development
Jhpiego works at the national level in countries throughout
the world to obtain acceptance of strategies, policies and plans for developing
up-to-date education and training programs in family
planning, reproductive health,
HIV/AIDS,
infection
prevention and
maternal and child health. The
goal of this work is the establishment of sustainable education and training
systems that will ensure a steady supply of clinical trainers and health care
providers and ultimately will lead to improved quality of health care.
Since 1973, Jhpiego has helped more than 40 countries
strengthen their preservice education and in-service training systems.
- Preservice education is
the formative education offered by nursing, midwifery and medical schools
over a period of 1 to 6 years.
- In-service training is
training for health care professionals who have completed their basic
(preservice) education and are already in practice.
As one part of our work
in education and training, Jhpiego has partnered with ministries of health
and medical, nursing and midwifery schools in many countries to develop
curricula on a number of health topics for both the preservice and in-service arenas.
Jhpiego uses a well-developed instructional design process
to create comprehensive, competency-based materials for group-based and
individualized learning. An important element of this process is integration
of evidence-based information into the materials, which are used in both
the preservice and inservice settings to strengthen providers’ knowledge
and skills.
To help meets its goal of establishing effective, sustainable
education and training systems worldwide, Jhpiego has developed and applied
a number of innovative learning approaches—such as structured on-the-job
training, modified computer-assisted learning (ModCAL®), technology-assisted
learning centers and e-mail based training courses—to increase training
efficiency and impact. Since 1992, Jhpiego has developed more than 40
comprehensive global and country-specific training packages in addition
to many other educational documents, training tools and curricula. These materials
are available in print,
on-line
and in CD-ROM formats, and many have been
translated into French, Russian, Spanish and local languages.
To assist clinicians in making the transition from health care
providers to clinical trainers, Jhpiego has developed a structured
faculty
and trainer development process, or “pathway.” This process is applicable to both
preservice faculty and in-service trainers. At the heart of our education
and training approach is an emphasis on continual practice, coaching and
evaluation to help students and trainees master the knowledge, skills and
attitudes they need to provide high-quality care.
