Since 1998, we’ve been working to improve the health of Beninese women, men and children.

  • Group antenatal care (G-ANC) was introduced in Benin in 20 health facilities in Atlantique Department, and more than 1,085 pregnant women participated in at least one G-ANC meeting in the first eight months of implementation (April to December 2021).
  • To broaden access to DMPA-SC, an injectable contraceptive known as Sayana Press®, Jhpiego collaborated with the Ministry of Health, USAID and other partners to develop a scale-up plan validated by the Ministry and now in effect. The plan integrates high-impact approaches such as self-injection, delegation of tasks, service integration and distribution of DMPA-SC via new channels such as private clinics and pharmacies.

Our Technical Areas in Benin

Our Work in Benin

Under this two-year project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Jhpiego is providing continuous technical assistance in the introduction and scale-up of subcutaneous depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-SC) in Benin, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Togo. Also known as Sayana® Press, DMPA-SC is an innovative injectable contraceptive that can be self-injected and has the potential to dramatically expand family planning access and choice when offered as part of a broad method mix. In addition to seeking to make DMPA-SC, including self-injection, more available in the three countries, the project aims to ensure provision of technical assistance, knowledge sharing, data tools, research findings and other resources to enable more than 30 countries to introduce and scale up DMPA-SC and self-injection.

This project aims to coordinate and support the government of Benin in implementing their plans to scale up and institutionalize subcutaneous depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-SC), also known as Sayana® Press, in their budgeted national family planning strategic plans, in collaboration with the private sector and other national and regional implementing partners. Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the project seeks to strengthen the country’s capacity for accelerated and autonomous implementation of the DMPA-SC self-injection scale-up plan in collaboration with the government, and coordinated between the public and private sectors, Access Collaborative partners and other implementing partners by end of project.
