USAID
Supporting the health and wellbeing of Cambodians since 2006.
- USAID’s MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership project has supported the Ministry of Health’s Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse (DMHSA), along with other national and sub-national stakeholders, to develop two curricula for mental health and psychosocial support capacity strengthening: one for frontline health providers and one for community leaders to enable them to provide peer support in their communities.
- From May to July 2024, MOMENTUM initiated community awareness activities led by local authorities and village health support groups, supporting 259 events and reaching 16,447 community members.
- MOMENTUM also supports DMHSA in data collection and utilization—a critical piece in strengthening mental health services. Key activities include co-creating updates to a mental health register, supporting development of a department monitoring and evaluation plan, and supporting DMHSA in enhancing mental health data accuracy, consistency, management and reporting processes.
- Under the Maternal and Child Survival Program, a study identified significant opportunities to improve gestational age estimation and use of antenatal care health information for pregnant women, thereby improving the quality of care.

MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership
Moving Integrated, Quality Maternal, Newborn and Child Health and Family Planning and Reproductive Health Services to Scale (MOMENTUM) is a suite of projects, funded by USAID, that aims to accelerate reductions in maternal, newborn and child mortality and morbidity in high-burden countries by increasing host country commitment and capacity to provide high-quality, integrated health care. Each of the projects has a specific focus area; together they provide a comprehensive, flexible package of support for countries as they overcome context-specific health challenges towards sustainable development. The six-year, Jhpiego-led MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership project focuses on: 1) providing targeted technical and capacity development assistance to our missions, partner countries and local organizations; and 2) contributing to global technical leadership and policy dialogue for improved maternal, newborn and child health, voluntary family planning and reproductive health outcomes. Jhpiego’s sub-partners under this project are: Save the Children, Johns Hopkins University International Vaccine Access Center, Quicksand, Matchboxology, BAO Systems, Avenir Health, McKinsey and Company, PACT, Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Christian Connections for International Health, and Ubora Quality Institute.
In Cambodia, the project is working in partnership with DMHSA, provincial health departments, operational districts and local partners to strengthen trauma-informed mental health care in four targeted provinces (Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Preah Vihear and Tboung Khmums). Project approaches and activities are organized by three objectives: 1) capacity of all relevant stakeholders at community, health facility and national levels related to mental health enhanced; 2) systems to support patient entry to the formal health system strengthened; and 3) evidence-based materials developed to make a case for additional resources to support mental health in Cambodia.
