Joining the COVID-19 response in our hometown.

  • Since its inception in 1974, Jhpiego has been headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland.
  • In 2020, we teamed up with the Baltimore City Health Department to tackle COVID-19, and expanded that support to Washington, D.C., in 2021.
  • With the Baltimore City Health Department, Jhpiego trained more than 200 contact tracers from August 2020 to June 2021, and helped get 80% of eligible Baltimore City residents vaccinated against COVID-19 by February 2022.

Our Work in USA

Jhpiego has drawn upon its global experience in scale-up of large public health programs, training and mentoring of community health workers, disease investigation and vaccines delivery to provide training, technical assistance and program management support to the Baltimore City Health Department’s COVID-19 response. As part of the innovative, multi-partner Baltimore Health Corps Initiative launched in June 2020, Jhpiego supported the hiring, deployment and training of more than 200 contact tracers, all of whom had lost their jobs or had their work substantially affected due to the economic fallout of the pandemic. With the arrival of COVID-19 vaccines in December 2020, Jhpiego’s role expanded to: developing a training for vaccination workers; building a team of community health workers for mobile vaccination clinics; and hiring a team of people to support, manage and advise a community-centered vaccine outreach and education response, also known as COVAX.
