Why Focus on Reproductive Health?

Family planning is a right. It also saves lives and gives individuals the time, health and energy to care for their families, stay in school, get a job or start a business. Yet millions of people still lack access to modern contraception and reproductive health care. We work tirelessly to ensure that everyone gets the care they need to build their futures.

From 2016 to 2020, 2,616,113 women in 36 countries voluntarily initiated postpartum family planning through Jhpiego-supported programs.

How We Make an Impact

Information is a vital piece of any family planning program. We develop and put into practice tools and techniques to make information about contraception and reproductive health accessible—including building health care workers’ counseling skills, designing tools that explain how contraceptives work in the body and integrating chatbots with which people can interact to get information on family planning and where to access it in their community. We use an array of communication channels, including mobile, to get this information to the people who need it.

We support health care workers in both public and private sector health facilities to provide high-quality, respectful reproductive care. We provide training on a wide range of methods—from the lactational amenorrhea method, which reduces fertility while ensuring that newborns’ nutritional needs are met, to long-acting reversible methods, such as implants and intrauterine devices—and everything in between. We also work with facility and local health office leaders to identify and address quality of care goals.

We work with governments and other partners to build systems and structures and mobilize resources that ensure access to high-quality family planning services. We help ensure that service delivery points have the trained staff and supplies to offer a range of services, including family planning integrated with maternal, newborn and child health, cervical cancer or HIV/AIDS services, and that policymakers have up-to-date, accurate information. We support district managers to review data from their catchment area family planning activities and services, and facilitate problem-solving to increase equity and reach.

Technical approach to family planning & reproductive health

Jhpiego’s goal is to ensure that all individuals’ sexual and reproductive health and rights are respected, protected and fulfilled. To achieve this vision, Jhpiego follows a multipronged approach. We work to understand providers’ and clients’ knowledge, attitudes, behavior and social norms surrounding family planning and reproductive health at various points in their lives; use these insights and our clinical expertise in integrating health services to optimize organization and delivery of family planning and reproductive health services; and create an environment that supports provision and continued use of these services. Our initiatives and efforts aim to overcome barriers to access and bend the curve toward ensuring high-quality, safe and effective family planning and reproductive health services for all.
