How We Make an Impact

Jhpiego is a long-time leader in applying evidence-based approaches to improve the quality of health care. We use a systems approach to attain optimal care and experience for clients at each point of contact within the health system, as well as safe and satisfied health workers. We form a strong foundation for successful and sustainable quality improvements by creating and communicating a shared vision for change, creating a sense of urgency to change and nurturing a culture of quality. We then build on this foundation by ensuring systems, structures and processes are in place that lead to safe, effective, timely, efficient, equitable, people-centered and integrated care.

To support health workers to provide high-quality services, we provide continuing professional development using learning approaches that have been proven effective in various settings. These evidence-based approaches include: competency-based training, which focuses on mastering specific skills; simulation, which replicates clinical practice using anatomic models before trainees can practice new skills on actual clients; onsite training at the provider’s workplace to minimize their time away; blended learning, which combines online and in-person teaching; and supportive supervision and mentorship at the worksite using objective, standardized criteria relevant to the clinical skills learned by the provider.

An essential part of high-quality health care is a positive experience by both the patient and provider. Positive experiences result in more client-centered care and improved health practices and use of health services. Thus, Jhpiego is working in countries to ensure respectful care of patients by health care providers, guided whenever possible by client feedback. Where and as needed, we seek to change providers’ behavior and improve their interpersonal communication and counseling skills, often via social and behavior change communications. To address providers’ experience of care and minimize provider burnout, we also carry out interventions to increase their motivation and ensure “caring for the carers.”

Networks of care are made up of health care providers, facilities and community-based services that coordinate with each other to ensure that individual patient needs are met from the moment their need for care is identified until the time that need is fully met. The ultimate goal of these networks is better health outcomes. By improving communication and coordination of care along the community-to-hospital continuum, these networks provide clients with the full range of evidence-based services they need at each point of care. Networks promote efficiency, effectiveness and people-centered care—and result in improved health outcomes.
