Bulbul Sood, MBBS, MNAMS, MPH
Dr. Bulbul Sood is a public health professional with more than 40 years of experience and was the Professor of Preventive and Social Medicine at Delhi’s Medical College for 23 years. Dr. Sood has been Jhpiego’s India Country Director since 2009. She is a respected figure in the public health field, known for her experience in international health and development, and has effectively demonstrated her ability to take programs forward in a holistic manner. Dr. Sood has strong technical expertise in reproductive health, extensive program management experience, and is well-known in the fields of family planning (FP), maternal health and reproductive health—both in India and internationally. She also has demonstrated skills in advocacy, negotiation and diplomacy.
As Jhpiego’s India Country Director, Dr. Sood has successfully led the revitalization of the Postpartum FP / Postpartum Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (PPFP/PPIUCD) program in India, leading to the Government of India (GoI) scaling up PPFP and PPIUCD services in more than 20 states and at all district-level facilities in the country’s six high-focus states. Similarly, strengthening of the Pre-Service Nursing and Midwifery Education program started in a couple of states and is now being scaled up by the GoI in more than 10 states in the country. Dr. Sood was the Co-Chair of the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood in India from 2003 to 2010 and was successful in advancing the country’s safe motherhood agenda by working collaboratively with the GoI, bilateral and multilateral donors, UN organizations, and international and national nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Before joining Jhpiego, she served as Country Director for the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA) and as Program Coordinator with AVSC International (now EngenderHealth).
Dr. Sood is a member of the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) Family Planning Medical Eligibility Decision-Making Committee; a member of the INFO Editorial Advisory Committee of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Communication Programs; a peer reviewer for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Reproductive Health in Atlanta; a technical advisory group member of the Maternal Health Task Force of the Harvard School of Public Health; and a member of the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Coalition and Maternal Health Task Force of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GoI.
Somesh Kumar, MBBS, MPH
Deputy Country Director and Head of Programs
Dr. Somesh Kumar has extensive national and international experience as Senior Technical Advisor to public health programs. His experience encompasses technical support, management, supervision, oversight, and monitoring and evaluationof entire portfolios of projects related to maternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH). As Director of Programs at Jhpiego India, he oversees the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and quality of all programs, and works with stakeholders at all levels to scale up FP and MNCH programs.
Dr. Kumar previously worked with the Norwegian Government, where he was the Senior Technical Advisor for MNCH and Deputy Head of Section for Health (Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5) and Development Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He handled the entire portfolio of projects related to maternal and child health supported by the Norway India Partnership Initiative, including support to UNICEF, the WHO and State Health Societies. Dr. Kumar has also served as a member of several national-level technical advisory groups for MNCH and has been involved in devising strategies and designing programs related to maternal and child health, using evidence-based interventions suited to the epidemiological context of the implementing areas. He has been associated with PATH as a consultant in the Japanese Encephalitis Control Program, has worked for Nigeria’s National Programme on Immunization and has served the National Polio Surveillance Project (NPSP) under the WHO.
Rashmi Asif, MD (Obs/Gyne), MD (Community Medicine)
Director, Clinical Services and Training (MNH)
Dr. Rashmi Asif has over 38 years of national and international experience in the areas of MNCH and reproductive health. She is an ob/gyn specialist and has a public health background. During her service as Lecturer in the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Community Medicine at J.N. Medical College, Aligarh, and as Senior Consultant and Lecturer in the Department of Obs/Gyn at Al-Jalah Hospital, Al-Fateh University, Tripoli, she taught and trained undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Working in the development sector since 1996, Dr. Asif has developed curricula and competency-based training materials for doctors and paramedic staff on FP, including PPFP, infection prevention, midwifery and newborn care. Acknowledged as a technical expert, she helped the GoI develop national guidelines for skilled birth attendants and emergency obstetric care for doctors, operational guidelines for 24/7 primary and community health centers, and quality assurance for reproductive and child health services. On several occasions since 1992, Dr. Asif has assessed sites for their readiness to provide services and training. She has also conducted needs assessments for training, training of trainers activities, and clinical trainings for FP counseling and IUCD, PPIUCD and midwifery services for doctors, nurses and auxiliary nurse midwives. She has mentored and built the capacities of trainers and service providers for quality of care in MNCH and FP.
Dr. Asif has worked with reputable international NGOs like IntraHealth, CEDPA, Ipas and PATH, and provided technical and managerial leadership in individual countries and throughout the Asia / Near East region as well as with the GoI, both at the national and state levels. As an international training expert, she provides technical leadership and support to Jhpiego’s in-country programs and also supported the Government of Afghanistan to initiate the PPIUCD program in their country.
Saswati Das, MBBS, MCH
Director, Clinical Services and Training (FP)
In her 20 years of experience in public health, Dr. Saswati Das has provided technical and managerial leadership in maternal and child health, FP, reproductive health, HIV prevention, quality of care, curriculum development, and transfer of learning through responsive participatory training and post-training supportive supervision. Prior to joining Jhpiego, she worked with other international organizations, including Population Services International as Director of Medical Services and Training and IntraHealth International as Country Clinical Manager, and led major public health programs in India. A well-known clinical and public health expert, Dr. Das has numerous presentations and publications to her credit. She has presented in many national and international forums, and has been a member of several technical advisory groups with government and international health organizations. She has also been recognized as an International Training Expert by Jhpiego’s Global Learning Office and provides technical assistance to countries aside from India, especially other South Asian and African countries.
Sanjeev Samuel Chauhan
Director, Finance and Administration
Mr. Sanjeev Chauhan is a finance and administration professional with more than 27 years of experience working with various Indian and multinational corporations as well as the US Embassy in India. He serves as Director of Finance and Administration, providing financial and administrative management support for the Jhpiego India programs. He is responsible for implementing and supervising the on-site financial accounting and bookkeeping system required to assure the integrity and effective performance of Jhpiego India’s financial operations and is the primary financial and administrative liaison with Jhpiego’s headquarters in Baltimore. Mr. Chauhan supervises the activities of the administrative and financial staff to maintain daily operations in an efficient and effective manner. His extensive experience includes almost 10 years of working as a Financial Analyst with USAID’s India Mission and the US Embassy. He is fully knowledgeable about various donor rules, regulations, professional accounting and auditing standards, and local accounting and statutory requirements.
Indu Malhotra, MBA
Senior Human Resources (HR) Advisor
Ms. Indu Malhotra holds an MBA in HR Management from Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. She possesses extensive experience in the field of HR development and has worked with both the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors. Prior to joining Jhpiego, she worked with PATH, an international public health NGO, to establish the HR function in India and harness the strengths of a large staff. She also worked with Strategic Alliance Management Services, Naveen Group and Dalmia Group. Ms. Malhotra is adept at managing recruitments, compensation and employee relations, developing HR systems and administering HR operations. She strongly believes in collaboration, hard work and discipline. At Jhpiego, she also mentors some HR staff members in the Asia region.
Vivek Yadav, MBBS,MPH
Dr. Vivek Yadav is a public health professional with more than 12 years of experience. He holds a Master’s degree in Public Health from Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and received his medical degree in Armenia. He began his career as a medical practitioner at government-run hospitals in New Delhi. Thereafter, he joined the State Health Services and worked as Medical Officer in the interiors of Haryana. Prior to joining Jhpiego in 2010, Dr. Yadav worked with the National Polio Surveillance Project, a joint initiative of the WHO and the GoI, serving for six years in remote pockets of Bihar. He provides national-level management to some of Jhpiego’s key programs that strengthen PPFP (including PPIUCD) services in India.
Neeraj H. Agrawal, MD, DPH
Dr. Neeraj Agrawal is a health professional with more than 12 years of professional experience. In these years, he has fulfilled a variety of roles—including Manager, Technical Advisor, Team Leader and Director—in various assignments with USAID’s Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program, PATH, UNICEF, WHO’s NPSP and corporate companies like Chengdu Institute of Biological Products, IPCA International, McCann Health and Indegene Lifesystems. His competencies in the health care sector include epidemiology, field research and biostatistics; health programming; disease surveillance; and collection and analysis of statistical data. Dr. Agrawal has, during his years in public health, liaised with and provided technical support to the GoI and various state governments. He possesses excellent health communication skills and is adept at engaging and networking with key opinion leaders and stakeholders.
Vikas Yadav, MD, MPH
Dr. Vikas Yadav is a physician and public health professional with more than 12 years of experience. He holds a Master’s in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health and an MD in Social and Preventive Medicine from SMS Medical College, University of Rajasthan. Dr. Yadav previously worked in the Department of Health Policy and Management as a Research Associate and Project Manager for the BetterBirth WHO Safe Childbirth Checklist trial, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He designed the implementation strategy, developed implementation tools, contributed to overall study design, and performed day-to-day management of the program.
Dr. Yadav also served as Technical Expert for Health with Catholic Relief Services in India, supporting the design and implementation of programs in the areas of maternal and child health, nutrition, and infectious diseases. Prior to that, Dr. Yadav worked as Officer on Special Assignment at the regional level in Bihar for the WHO’s NPSP, through which he managed polio surveillance and immunization activities in extremely low-resource settings. He also coordinated the WHO’s response to flooding in Bihar in 2008. He was the recipient of the JN Tata Award in India in 2010 and the Carson Family Scholarship at Harvard in 2011. Dr. Yadav’s main areas of interest are maternal and child health, health financing, and disease surveillance.
Vineet Srivastava, MBBS, MBA, MPH
Associate Director-Family Planning
Dr. Vineet Kumar Srivastava is a public health professional with more than 13 years of experience in strategizing and implementing national and state – level public health programs. He holds rich experience in designing program strategies; project management; monitoring, research and evaluation; capacity building and documentation. A skilled advocate for safe motherhood, reproductive and adolescent health, and family planning programs, he is known for managing diverse funds, and facilitating multi-sectoral stakeholder partnerships. Dr. Srivastava’s approach draws on his extensive education in Public Health. He is a medical graduate, with an MBA in Healthcare Management and a Master’s degree Public Health.
Prior to joining Jhpiego, Dr. Srivastava has served some of the most reputed national and international public health organizations, namely PATH, UNICEF, WHO and the World Bank.
Sudharsanam Balasubramaniam, MBBS, MD, Dip.NB, MPH, CPH
Associate Director-Monitoring, Evaluation and Research
Dr. Sudharsanam Manni Balasubramaniam is a maternal and child health (MCH) expert and epidemiologist with more than 10 years of public health and research experience. He serves as Associate Director-Monitoring, Evaluation and Research at Jhpiego’s India office. He holds an MPH in epidemiology and biostatistics from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is also board certified as a public health professional in the United States. Dr. Balasubramaniam has his MD in Community Medicine and is a medical graduate. His work experience blends academics and research. He has designed and conducted research studies in various medical departments and guided postgraduates in planning, implementing, analyzing and presenting their dissertations and projects. He was Associate Professor and Medical Officer in charge of the Urban Health Center in a private medical school; part-time faculty in social pediatrics and project coordinator for Sahishnatha Trust, Chennai, India; and faculty at the prestigious Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. Dr. Balasubramaniam has evaluated several programs and research projects in MCH and has also implemented MCH field-based research projects and programs. He has rich experience in disaster management and was involved in post-tsunami activities including disease surveillance and MCH programs. His areas of expertise are quality of care measurement, adolescent health, designing and analyzing evaluation studies, and scientific writing. He has to his credit several peer-reviewed publications in national and international journals and is a lifetime member of several prestigious public health associations including the Alpha Chapter of the Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society, USA.
