I wish you and your families a very happy, peaceful and healthy 2013!
2012 was a year of growth for Jhpiego in India. We consolidated our position by continuing our technical assistance to the Government of India at the national and state levels as they revitalize postpartum family planning (PPFP)/postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device (PPIUCD) services in 19 states and strengthen pre-service nursing and midwifery education (PSE). Our latest program, promoting quality of care during childbirth by integrating the WHO Safe Childbirth Checklist into quality and performance improvement efforts, has rolled out successfully in Rajasthan.
It’s heartening to note that Jhpiego’s technical assistance has been recognized widely, as is reflected in our diverse funding sources, which now include the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Norway India Partnership Initiative (NIPI), the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation and the Department for International Development (DFID).Our biggest strength is our staff, and I am truly thankful to be leading a team of such passionate, dedicated and knowledgeable individuals. We have a strong team of close to 90 doctors, nurses and other professionals, and we have a country office in Delhi along with eight state offices. Jhpiego works collaboratively with national and state governments and has played a catalytic role in ensuring proper planning and appropriate utilization of resources in government systems. Our innovative and focused programming has helped many women adopt the family planning method of their choice, has strengthened pre-service education for nurse-midwives, and has improved the quality of care imparted to mothers and babies at public health institutions.
Last year, more than 4,000 providers were trained in PPFP/PPIUCD services, more than 500,000 women were counseled for PPFP and more than 51,000 women accepted PPIUCD insertions through programs facilitated by Jhpiego. Jhpiego partnered with the government to host the second national review meeting on family planning, entitled “Strengthening Postpartum Family Planning Services.” This landmark event was well attended, with representatives from all 35 states. Ms. Anuradha Gupta, the Additional Secretary and Mission Director, NRHM, MoHFW, GoI, laid out the Government’s strategy for family planning and acknowledged the technical assistance provided by Jhpiego.
For PSE programs, the Government of India adopted Jhpiego’s pioneer work with the Indian Nursing Council to develop a strategy to strengthen PSE for the nursing and midwifery cadre and further decided to scale up this strategy from three to ten high-focus states. A six-week training course for nursing and midwifery teachers was started at the National Nodal Center at Kolkata and has already trained close to 60 tutors from Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Bihar.
The year 2013 is a very special year for Jhpiego globally, as it marks our 40th anniversary! It has been an incredible 40 years, working in more than 150 countries to prevent the needless deaths of women and their families. This year will see celebrations across more than 50 countries where Jhpiego is currently working.
In India too, we look forward to this being a very exciting year! We will continue to work in close partnership with national and state governments, partners as well as our donors towards the goal of saving the lives of many mother, infants and families.
