The launch of the India country webpage is a big moment for Jhpiego India, and it gives me immense pleasure to welcome you to it! For some time now, we have felt the need for a medium to interact closely and regularly with all our partners and stakeholders, learn from your work and share our achievements and findings with a wider audience, both locally and internationally. This need has led to the birth of this live country web page.
Although Jhpiego has been working in India since the mid-nineties with the Innovations in Family Planning Services Project, Jhpiego’s India office was established in February 2009. Our first program after setting up the office was under the U. S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID’s) ACCESS Family Planning Program, which aimed to reduce the unmet need for family planning among postpartum women by strengthening family planning services at the national level and in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.
Over the last three years, we have grown tremendously. Today, Jhpiego India has a diverse portfolio. It is the lead agency providing technical assistance to the Government of India at the national and state levels for strengthening postpartum family planning and revitalizing postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) services in 19 states. Jhpiego is also working to strengthen pre-service nursing and midwifery education in India, which is an initiative of the Indian Nursing Council, along with the national and state governments. Jhpiego has promoted quality of care during childbirth by integrating the Safe Childbirth Checklist into quality and performance improvement efforts in India. We have grown rapidly to a strong team of 72 health care and other professionals, with offices in nine states in addition to our India headquarters in New Delhi. Our programs in India are funded by the USAID, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Norway India Partnership Initiative (NIPI), the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, MacArthur Foundation and Department for International Development (DFID).
Friends, this medium presents a wonderful opportunity and platform to share our learning and hear from you regularly. I look forward to a truly dynamic and interactive webpage.
