Jhpiego has been working in Afghanistan since 2002, initially with funding from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Currently, Jhpiego is partnering with Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health to implement the “HEMAYAT: Helping Mothers and Children Thrive” project, a five-year, USAID-funded initiative in 23 provinces. In addition, UNICEF is supporting a two-year project for Jhpiego to conduct and disseminate a national maternal and newborn health quality-of-care assessment.
