Africa

Jhpiego began working in Africa in the late 1970s when we conducted our first training activities in Tunisia and Kenya. Our network of providers, who trained at The Johns Hopkins University throughout the 1970s, had started to expand globally. Since then, the quality and establishment of health care services in Africa have continued to face numerous challenges—including malaria, AIDS, and high rates of infant mortality. With a population of 818 million in 2001 and a growth rate of 2.4% year (0.6% for the USA), Africa's population will reach 1,800 million by 2050 (United Nations estimate).

In Africa, we work in close partnership with universities, ministries of health and nongovernmental organizations. Our dynamic partnerships help us address the needs of host-country partners to establish a national capacity to educate, train and support health care personnel to provide high-quality services.

Countries in Africa where we currently have programs and/or are supporting others' efforts are listed below. To learn more about our country programs, go to Feature Articles and/or browse our Publications Catalog. For a list of Jhpiego contacts in the Africa region, go to Field Offices and Representatives.

Asia, Near East and Europe

A course for South Korean health care providers in 1975 marked the beginning of Jhpiego's work in the Asia, Near East and Europe region. Since then, Jhpiego has transferred skills in training, family planning, and maternal and neonatal health to thousands of providers in more than 20 countries in the region.

During the last two decades, the region has undergone tremendous change due to the spread of HIV and the emergence of new nations. Countries differ widely in governance, economy and culture, all of which have profound implications for population health. To meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving environment, Jhpiego has developed innovative strategies to adapt to the situation of each country— maximizing impact and sustainability.

Latin America and the Caribbean

Jhpiego's field work began in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, starting with programs in Brazil and Colombia. Through the years, Jhpiego has been active in various countries in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Jhpiego continues to work in close partnership with reproductive health leaders to strengthen national training and service delivery networks. Jhpiego draws on the knowledge and specialized skills of Jhpiego-trained Latin American consultants and staff to provide “South-to-South” technical assistance in reproductive health, prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV/AIDS, infection prevention, and maternal and neonatal health. The key to the success of the technical assistance is its cultural appropriateness and acceptability, in tandem with current medical and technical expertise.
