Terri Kilcarr Balaran is a partner at Brown Advisory and a portfolio manager in the Washington office. She manages balanced portfolios for private clients and smaller not for-profits. Ms. Balaran’s client base spans several major cities beyond Washington, DC, including New York, the Bay Area and Los Angeles. She is inspired by her diverse mix of clients—from entrepreneurs and company builders to financial professionals and corporate executives, many of whom are women and leaders in their fields and communities. Within Brown Advisory, Ms. Balaran is a senior member of the Women of Washington group, which is building a strong, growing network of women to learn from and lean on.
Prior to joining Brown Advisory in 2009, Ms. Balaran was managing director at FBR Private Wealth in Arlington, Virginia (1999–2009), where she served as investment advisor to a number of Washington, DC-area private clients and philanthropies. From 1995–1996, she was a managing director overseeing client services at Potomac Asset Management in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1995, Ms. Balaran was a consultant to the World Bank in Washington, DC, assisting the pension investment team in its evaluation of global portfolio risk. She began her investing career in New York, where she spent a decade (1984–1994) focusing largely on private client management at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Ms. Balaran is a board member of the Ellington Fund of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Washington, DC. She also mentors veterans transitioning from long-term military service to civilian careers through The COMMIT Foundation.
She holds a higher diploma in Anglo-Irish literature from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, and a BA from George Washington University.
