Innovations Team Vying for DevelopmentXChange and Peoples Choice Awards

The U.S. Agency for International Development, the Government of Norway, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada and The World Bank recently called upon the brightest minds across the globe to identify and scale up transformative prevention and treatment approaches for pregnant women and newborns in rural, low resource settings around the time of birth. The organizers are also sponsoring an on-line contest to promote the work and select a “People’s Choice Award” winner.

From the 600 innovators who responded, 75 finalists were chosen—including two entries from Jhpiego.

Here is a brief description of the Jhpiego entries that made the finalist list:

The persistence of mortality and severe morbidity from pre-eclampsia and eclampsia (PE/E) demands a new approach. Jhpiego had developed a series of interventions which are designed for earlier detection of PE/E, and earlier initiation of treatment, and earlier referral to emergency obstetric care—key to reducing mortality and morbidity. Vote for “Application of Transition Grant.”

The E-Partogram is an affordable, easy-to-use, handheld electronic decision-making tool for preventing or managing complications during labor. It is an easy, affordable tool that can be used to record clinical observations, predict complications and obtain problem-solving support, including from distant senior-level clinicians. Vote for “E-Partogram.”

The Innovations Team will present Jhpiego’s entries July 26-28 to a panel of judges who will decide the winner of the overall challenge.
