Standing by Women and their Right to Health Care

Jhpiego responds to U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization

Baltimore, Md. (June 24, 2022)—The decision today by the U.S. Supreme Court overturning a woman’s right to safe abortion care undermines what Jhpiego has been working toward since our founding—the right of a woman wherever she lives to be at the center of her care and in charge of her sexual and reproductive health.

Through our work these past five decades, we understand and affirm that women are best positioned to make fully informed decisions—the kind that will impact their lives forever—whether in planning how and when to start a family, the type of care they will seek, or the details of their childbirth experience.

Women everywhere deserve the basic human right to make those informed decisions for themselves and in the context of what’s best for their family. The right to receive quality health services that will help women and their families achieve their dreams and reach their goals is one we will continue to support without question.

The Supreme Court’s decision in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization effectively overturns the constitutional right of women to safe abortion care established in Roe v. Wade in 1973.

Jhpiego’s focus and commitment will continue to be to ensure access to safe, affordable, equitable, and quality health services for all people wherever they live.
