Laerdal Global Health Donates 1,000 Birthing Simulators to Support Major Educational Initiative to Reduce Deaths from Postpartum Hemorrhage, the Worldwide Leading Cause of Maternal Deaths
At the 20th FIGO World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics in Rome this week, Jhpiego, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University, announced a major new educational program—Helping Mothers Survive. The program aims to significantly reduce the 120,000 maternal deaths currently occurring annually from uncontrolled bleeding after birth.
To support this initiative, Laerdal Global Health announced the donations of 1,000 MamaNatalie birthing simulators for training programs organized by UNFPA, the International Confederation of Midwives, the International Organization of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The simulators have been gifted through the Buy One Gift One campaign: for each MamaNatalie birthing simulator purchased in a high-income country since late 2010, another simulator is donated for use in training programs in low-resource nations. “We are delighted with the phenomenal response to this program and expect the number of gifted simulators to grow much further in the coming year,” said Tore Laerdal, CEO of Laerdal Global Health.
“Our partnership with Laerdal Global Health is helping to save lives every day,’’ said Dr. Leslie Mancuso, President and CEO of Jhpiego. “The new Helping Mothers Survive program and these MamaNatalie simulators will help us further improve the impact of our education of frontline health care workers in assisting women to give birth and manage potentially life-threatening complications.”
